LASG Tasks Principals On Quality Standards As School Resumes
The Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education has embarked on Intervention Strategy Leadership and Management training programme for Principals and Vice-Principals of Public Secondary Schools in the State Education Districts III, IV and V primarily to improve learners’ academic performance in external examinations through redefined delivery of quality education and management of schools.
According to the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, the intervention Strategy Leadership and Management training programme was embarked upon to boost academic performance in external examinations, increase zeal for academic excellence, inspired leadership and management as well as move government schools from improved to outstanding status.
In her words “As a leader, to become outstanding, the review of leadership and management skills is required in the 21st century. While management is about arranging and telling, leadership is about nurturing and enhancing. Principals, as leaders, must begin to set the pace through encouragement and collaboration because a key function of an outstanding leader is to build more leaders, not more followers”.
Soyombo reiterated that Principals must move towards new improved leadership styles and structures that require an honest evaluation of own strengths and weaknesses against agreed criteria.
She said there must be a collaborative approach to help one another develop competencies to form core new performance management systems and staff development initiatives.
According to her, school leadership must start having a clear long-term vision, foresee problems and begin to communicate new ideas for a management team to review and improve established practices.
The Director-General maintained that the use of data to identify long-term trends and patterns for future planning must be embraced to improve schools and Head of Schools must begin to be child-centred by assigning tasks to students, monitor their environment and requesting feedback from both students and teachers.
“Teaching must be geared towards the application of knowledge by making use of appropriate methods and instructional materials to promote deep learning while ensuring adequate coverage of subject schemes. Mental mathematics must be encouraged to arouse in-depth and practical learning in students, leading to high learner performance while timetables should be reviewed to give more attention to core subjects”, she added.
Mrs Soyombo emphasised that learners must be exposed to examiners reports, marking guides and past examination questions while punctuality should be made a priority and current relevant textbooks in all subjects should be provided for learners to encourage independent learning.
Responding, principals were unanimous in their perception of the intervention training, submitting that it will help them to bring out the best in both their schools and the students through modern teaching approach and result from oriented leadership styles.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Oluranti Adebule has reiterated the commitment of the State government to providing standard and quality education to pupils of public and private schools in a conducive and safe learning environment as schools resume academic activities.
In a statement released by the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education, the Deputy Governor welcomed the students back to school and enjoined Principals and Heads of Schools to maintain a high standard hygienic environment for students.
According to her, Principals and Head of Schools should improve on quality teaching and learning while empowering students to take more ownership of their learning through the assistance of their teachers.
