Trump Warns Iran Was "Weeks Away" From Nuclear Weapon, Hints at Military Response
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has made explosive claims that Iran was mere "weeks away" from developing a nuclear weapon before he left office in 2021, while suggesting potential military action may still be necessary to curb Tehran's atomic ambitions.
In a fiery campaign speech in Florida, the Republican presidential candidate stated: "They were on the 1-yard line when I took over in 2016, and through my maximum pressure campaign, we stopped them cold." Trump asserted that his administration's sanctions and the targeted killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in 2020 had critically delayed Iran's nuclear program.
The controversial remarks come amid heightened Middle East tensions, with Trump signaling he would take an even harder line if re-elected: "If you want peace, prepare for war. The mullahs understand only strength."
Current intelligence assessments contradict Trump's timeline, with U.S. officials estimating Iran would need at least 6-12 months to weaponize nuclear material. However, Tehran has significantly increased its uranium enrichment since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal.
The White House declined to comment on Trump's assertions, while Iranian officials dismissed them as "warmongering lies" meant to justify future aggression.
